    I had to smile when you talked about slipping the kicks between the hands. I was playing around with the six-stroke roll and put the singles between the doubles and it struck me that that could be a groove...so I've been working on it. I'm pretty sure somebody else has done that...but I just haven't come across that. Anyway, I love the idea of mixing up licks and or rudiments...I'm just getting into inverting...

    • @DaveMajor
      @DaveMajor 19 днів тому

      Thanks. Any exercise...maximum of 5 minutes. But you can stack numerous exercises together. Within those 5 mins you can increase the tempo if you feel relaxed. This goes for any non musical exercise as well euch as kick drum builders or motion exercises. Then repeat every day until you reach your goal tempo

    marching percussion (battery) would call this a gridding exercise and I strongly agree. This is how you move around with shape and depth. With out dynamics and thougtful accent placment its just a block pattern. This video is a gem for alot of mono drummers of all types

    How do you think the steel Kompressor compares to a Sonor PAD14 14x6.5 snare drum (Panther Series 1987) or SONOR D-506 - Phonic Series Ferro-Manganese Steel 14x6.5 Snare Drum (1989-1996)?

    • @DaveMajor
      @DaveMajor 27 днів тому

      Honestly no idea mate. Havent played those drums before but id imagine its hold up really well. Its a great drum

    • @James-Chapman-Drums
      @James-Chapman-Drums 19 днів тому

      The Kompressor is a great drum. The ferro snares have a slightly thicker and warmer tone. They’re less snappy and have less top end than a typical steel shell. The Kompressor gives the classic steel snap and bite that you might want. Both are just as good, but different.

    Dave,I’ve seen Steve Smith do a clinic in the exact same concept. As your a fan of New Breed if you read 1 2 3A/B (or Chuck Kerrigans book)and turn every figure into a flam followed by the same hand and singles as the joiners you get a lot more variations instead of just randomly switching from stickings plus the students learn to read and understand phrasing and not numbers. I’ve done a video on this but taking it a bit further and flattening out the flams. Check it out !

    This is not talked about enough, I made a mistake of playing my first year all heel up and burying the beater. I’m now trying to do a hybrid of heel up and heel down and practicing not burying the beater. It feels weird when you’re used to doing it only one way.

    Nice vid. Although I do agree in how you're breaking this down, I do believe this is just elaborating on the same pattern and still in the "box". I always suggest to truly free yourself of the pattern, to learn to not just switch up accents and sound sources (cymbals/drums/etc) but to literally LEAVE THE PATTERN. I suggest that once you've internalized, to practice playing the pattern the first half of the fill and then go into something else to end it. And switch that up, start by playing whatever and then end using that pattern. So on and so forth. Throw in the middle of a fill only playing a pattern once etc. I think this is where a lot of online teachers and teachers in general get it wrong because they're in a creating content mindset but in the expression mindset, you want to just have whatever pattern to bring out at random times, not just starting the fill and repeating the pattern x4 or however many times. Switching accent is great but it doesn't free you of the pattern is my point. Lastly, I mean no offense. Great video you put out here. I'm only making suggestions.

    • @DaveMajor
      @DaveMajor Місяць тому

      I think you miss the point here. The video demonstrates 3 tools you can apply to break from playing the same things the same way every time. With these 3 tools you have the opportunity to create and be free(er) but this isnt the end of the journey its a big step. The end, imo, is to play in any subdivision and any time signature totally flowing freely and creating the stickings on the fly. I have other videos on that and a whole course all about improvisation and developing that ability. This video forms a small part of the whole concept I teach to my students but putting the whole thing in a youtube video a) would be too long and b) would not reach as many people. As a drum teacher who makes videos as well I have to balance making impactful and helpful videos that also will do as well as they can.
